Belgium Eliminates United States from World Cup with 4-1 Victory

The United States men's national team saw its 2026 FIFA World Cup run come to an end Monday night after a 4-1 loss to Belgium in the Round of 16 at Lumen Field in Seattle.
Belgium controlled much of the match, with Charles De Ketelaere scoring twice to lead the Red Devils into the quarterfinals. De Ketelaere opened the scoring in the 9th minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to put Belgium ahead early. Hans Vanaken later added a goal after taking advantage of a costly mistake by U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese, while Romelu Lukaku scored in stoppage time to complete the rout.
The Americans briefly pulled even in the first half when Malik Tillman converted a direct free kick in the 31st minute that deflected off the Belgian wall, tying the game at 1-1. The equalizer didn't last long, however — De Ketelaere restored Belgium's lead in the 33rd minute with a close-range header, and the Red Devils never looked back.
Belgium extended its advantage in the second half. Vanaken made it 3-1 in the 57th minute after Freese lost control of the ball while trying to clear it outside the box. Lukaku, who came on as a substitute, put the match out of reach in stoppage time (90+2') to finish the scoring.
After being cleared to play following the overturning of his suspension, Folarin Balogun returned to the starting lineup but was unable to make the offensive impact he had shown earlier in the tournament.
The U.S. also faced adversity when Christian Pulisic exited the match with an injury after struggling to find his rhythm against Belgium's defense.
The defeat marks another familiar early exit for the United States, which has not advanced past the Round of 16 since 2002.
Despite the disappointing finish, the U.S. enjoyed an encouraging tournament that included a strong group-stage showing and a Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina before its World Cup journey came to an end.
Goal Scorers
🇧🇪 Charles De Ketelaere — 9', 33'
🇺🇸 Malik Tillman (USA) — 31'

Summer Lecture Series at the Dinosaur Park Digs Into Dire Wolves

Ogden's George S. Eccles Dinosaur Park is bringing prehistoric predators to life this month as its popular Summer Lecture Series turns its attention to one of the Ice Age's most fascinating hunters — the dire wolf.
The lecture takes place Saturday, July 11, at 11:00 a.m. at the park, offering visitors a chance to dig deeper into natural history alongside the park's paleontology experts.
This session shines a spotlight on Canis dirus — the dire wolf — a creature that has captured public imagination well beyond the fossil record. While the dire wolf's skeleton is nearly identical to that of the modern timber wolf, recent genetic research has revealed a more surprising story: dire wolves belonged to a lineage that split from the ancestors of today's wolves some six million years ago, with the modern Andean fox sharing that same branch of the family tree. That discovery has opened up new questions about how these animals may have actually looked in life, from fur color to ear shape.
It's the kind of topic that rewards curiosity — equal parts science, storytelling, and a little detective work — and a great way to spend a summer morning for families and lifelong learners alike.
Whether you're a longtime paleontology enthusiast or just dinosaur-curious, the Summer Lecture Series offers an engaging way to explore the ancient world right here in Ogden.
