Congress Votes to Lock the Clock β€” Permanent Daylight Saving Moves One Step Closer

Those twice-yearly clock changes may finally be on their way out.

The U.S. House of Representatives voted Tuesday to pass the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight saving time permanent nationwide. The bill passed with broad bipartisan support, 308–117, and now heads to the Senate for consideration.

What would it mean for us? No more "falling back" in November β€” clocks would stay one hour ahead year-round, trading darker winter mornings for more daylight on winter evenings. Supporters argue the change would benefit sleep schedules, health, and the economy, and the White House says it would eliminate the time, hassle, and cost of changing clocks twice a year. President Trump has backed the bill and said in May he would sign it into law if it reaches his desk.

It's not a done deal yet β€” a similar measure stalled in the Senate last year β€” but Utah is ahead of the curve: it's among the states that have already passed laws to adopt year-round daylight saving time as soon as Congress gives the green light.

Whisper, Please! Hogle Zoo Welcomes a Sand Cat Kitten

Heads up, Pleasant View drivers β€” a stretch of 500 West is about to get busy.

Utah's newest resident is tiny, fuzzy, and already a formidable desert predator in training.

Utah's Hogle Zoo has announced the birth of a sand cat kitten to first-time parents Cleo and Asim on June 2. The kitten remains unnamed while the care team waits to determine whether it's a boy or a girl β€” but visitors may already spot the pair in the Small Animal Building.

Zoo staff say Cleo has taken to motherhood beautifully. "She is a very attentive mother and can frequently be seen grooming her kitten and closely supervising playtime," says Brittany Wildman, Animal Care Supervisor.

One request if you visit: channel your inner desert cat and whisper. Sand cats have hearing about five times better than a house cat's, thanks to uniquely large ear canals built for detecting prey underground β€” so newborn kittens and their moms have incredibly sensitive ears. These remarkable little cats are native to some of the harshest deserts on Earth, where they hunt rodents, birds, and even venomous vipers.

Cleo came to Hogle Zoo in May 2025 through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Sand Cat Species Survival Plan, which helps maintain healthy, genetically diverse populations in accredited zoos.
