🗓️ THIS WEEK'S PICKS

Four worth building a plan around, July 30 – August 2.

Editor's Pick — Utah Championship (Thu–Sun): Pro golf almost never comes this close to home; walk the ropes at least one afternoon.

👨‍👩‍👧 Best Family — Roy Days (Sat): A full day of parade, car show, and fireworks, and it won't cost you a dime.

🌄 Best Outdoor — Ogden Farmers Market (Sat, 8 a.m.): Historic 25th Street at its best, before the heat sets in.

🌙 Best Date Night — "Hairspray" at Peery's (Fri/Sat): Dinner downtown and a big, joyful musical a block away.

⛳ THE ROAD TO THE PGA TOUR RUNS THROUGH OGDEN THIS WEEK

Fans can follow the action just feet from the ropes at Ogden Golf & Country Club.

Professional golf is coming to Weber County for the first time, and some of the next PGA Tour stars will be playing just a few feet from spectators.

The Utah Championship tees off Thursday at Ogden Golf & Country Club and runs through Sunday, with a $1,000,000 purse on the line. It's the tournament's debut on a Weber County course — it used to play down in Davis County — so this is new ground for Ogden.

Here's why it's a big deal: the Korn Ferry Tour is the last stop before the PGA TOUR. The players walking Washington Boulevard this weekend are a single good season from golf's biggest stage, and you'll see them up close in a way TV never allows.

Go for a single day or grab a four-day grounds pass, with Fan Deck and Intermountain Health Skybox upgrades if you want shade and a seat. Best part — kids 12 and under are free with a paying adult, and active and retired military are free with ID.

💡 New to tournament golf? Go Thursday or Friday when the crowds are thin, pick one group, and follow them for a few holes — it's the best way to appreciate how these players actually move a golf ball.

📅 Date: Thursday, July 30 – Sunday, August 2, 2026
🕖 Time: Play runs through the day; daily tee times on the official site
📍 Location: Ogden Golf & Country Club, 4197 Washington Blvd, Ogden
🎟️ Admission: Ticketed — grounds, Fan Deck, and Skybox; kids 12 & under and military free

🔥 ADAMS FIRE: WHERE THINGS STAND

Firefighters work a brush-covered hillside near homes.

The wildfire that swept south Washington Terrace on Monday is largely lined — but it took a neighbor's life.

The Adams Fire started around 11:45 a.m. Monday near the Weber River and railroad tracks and pushed fast through dry brush toward homes. Cecil "Ted" Burrell, 87, was badly burned inside his home and later died at the hospital, the Weber County Sheriff's Office confirmed. Our hearts are with his family.

Crews held the fire to about 45 acres and had it largely contained by Tuesday, and all evacuation orders were lifted Monday evening. One other home had minor damage and a camp trailer was destroyed; a sheriff's deputy hurt Monday was treated and released. The Utah State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating what started it.

📍 Location: South Washington Terrace, near the Weber River
🔥 Acres: About 45
⚠️ Cause: Under investigation (Utah State Fire Marshal's Office)
🚨 Status: Largely contained; evacuations lifted

🕯️ Our condolences to the Burrell family and everyone affected.

📢 Developing — we'll update containment and the cause as officials share more.

🚧 IF YOU'RE DRIVING THIS WEEK

Two projects are worth routing around. The northbound I-215 off-ramp to the airport is closed, along with two nearby ramps — give yourself extra time if you're catching a flight. And SR-177, the West Davis Highway, begins major construction as crews extend it north into West Point, so expect weekday work and slower going near the county line.

🛫 I-215 NB airport off-ramp: closed now
🚧 SR-177 (West Davis Hwy): construction begins this week
🔗 Updates: UDOT Region 1 (connect.udot.utah.gov/category/region-one)🚧 Lincoln Avenue Closes Monday. Here's What to Expect.

♟️ THE IRON KNIGHTS WILL TEACH YOU TO PLAY

No experience needed — the Iron Knights keep spare boards ready every Saturday at Grounds for Coffee.

Ogden's chess club runs on one rule: you don't need to know how.

Every Saturday morning, the Iron Knights set up boards at Grounds for Coffee on Harrison and play until noon — beginners, kids, and regulars all at the same tables. They keep spare sets on hand, they'll walk you through the rules if you've never moved a pawn, and nobody's tracking your record. Winner stays, puzzles get passed around, and the coffee's right there.

If Saturday doesn't work, the same crew meets Thursday evenings at Grounds for Coffee on 25th Street. Find them as the Ogden Iron Knights on Chess.com or "Ogden Chess – The Iron Knights" on Facebook. Bring a friend, bring your own set if you've got one, and just show up.

📍 Location: Grounds for Coffee, 3005 Harrison Blvd, Ogden
🕘 Time: Saturdays, 9 a.m.–noon (also Thursday evenings on 25th St)
💲 Cost: Free
👨‍👩‍👧 Beginner friendly: All ages & skill levels welcome

🌟 ONE GOOD THING

When the Adams Fire took off Monday, help came from every direction — crews from Weber, Davis, and Box Elder counties, Utah's forestry division, and Hill Air Force Base all worked the same hillside. Together they held a fast-moving fire to 45 acres and kept it out of a neighborhood full of homes. In a hard week, that's the part worth carrying with you.
